The last landscapes of Split Trogir and Venice
A great number of his oil on canvas works painted from 1950 to 1953 show that Vidović’s artistic mind did not break under the burden of his illness and old age. Here, the painter reduces the motif and hardly outlines objects, and with dot- or patch-like brush strokes he achieves the surface unity of his objects and space. The painting subject-matter and the glistening of its layers undertake the function of creating specific atmosphere which even though always different, makes the painting Vidović’s a great deal more than his signature.
In his last years he painted mainly the Kamerlengo Tower and the old shipyard. By reducing physical contents and by using surreal colouristic co-relations he leads the motif right up to the edge of vanishing turning the symbols of his youth into symbols of ceasing to exist.
