Vidović’s return to still lifes in 1938
Attracted by scenes and memories from Trogir, for some time Vidović abandoned the good spirits of his atelier. He returned to them as late as the end of the 1930s—his most prolific phase. In two years he painted the brilliant Old Madonna (1938), Still Life with Church Objects (1938), Old Paints and Brushes (1938), Madonna with Brushes (circa 1939), The Chinese Doll (1939), mainly oil or gouache on paper.
The painting technique is masterful – with fluttering brush strokes he varies the tones of one dominant colour, and using the lazure technique, leaves a white base visible thus achieving pervasion of objects and space, at times inserting a coloristic highlight, and finally merging everything into the visual unity of a refined poetic atmosphere.
