Emanuel Vidović’s war paintings
During the First World War, Emanuel Vidović painted in the spacious atelier of the then closed Municipal Theatre. The grim war years were beneficial for the creation of new, different works. These were large dark paintings consisting of layers of densely applied dots of colour, in which just a symbolical glimmer of light breaks the absolute darkness and pulls the landscape out onto the surface.
The motifs are Italian (Chioggia (Kiođa) and Venice) or, increasingly of Split, particularly the coast of Split – its western part from Sustipan to Matejuška, or its eastern part, up to the Harbourmaster’s Office.
