Vidović’s symbolist phase
From 1906 Emanuel Vidović focused on the search for a visual language through which he could adequately convey a realistic landscape into the imaginary world of his own visions, so he intuitively linked symbolism and abstraction.
He used the landscape with the bridge over the Jadro River as the basis for his painting Angelus, a work of art declared by the art historian Igor Zidić, the most abstract work of art in Croatian painting up until the First World War.
